Severe is a value for the highest level of the product's defects which make the application not usable:
- Crash - of the application itself, of the system, or other applications
- Data loss - data in the edited document, files on a local/remote disk
- Missing functionality with no workaround
- Security violation
- Blocking of further testing
Serious is a value for "heavy" functional and performance bugs:
- Missing functionality with a workaround
- Badly broken major functionality
- Low performance of major functionality
Moderate is a value for "light" functional bugs as well as "heavy" mistakes of appearance or wording or spelling that can confuse the user:
- Slightly broken major functionality
- Broken minor functionality
- Low performance of minor functionality
- Significant usability issue
- Significant appearance distortion which affects usability
- Wording/spelling mistake which affects meaning
Low are defects that don't prevent the user from using the application — just make it inconvenient:
- Unexpected behavior though results are proper
- Mild usability issue
- Mild appearance distortion not affecting usability
- Wording/spelling mistakes not affecting meaning
